Enel
The Italian electricity sector was liberalised. Enel played an active role in this process, which culminated in the “Bersani Decree” and a new architecture for Italy’s electricity system. When Enel was privatised in 1999, more than 3.8 billion shares were placed on the market. In July 2001, the number of shares halved to 1.9 billion following a reverse stock split. In keeping with the liberalisation process, and in pursuit of the objective of decentralizing its operations, the company spun off a number of units; Enel was converted into an industrial holding company. New companies grew up from the Group to pursue a diverse range of business opportunities.
